Overview
The State Bank of India (SBI) boasts a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century, with the establishment of the Bank of Calcutta in Calcutta on June 2, 1806. This institution later evolved into the Bank of Bengal on January 2, 1809, becoming the first joint-stock bank in British India, backed by the Government of Bengal. In subsequent years, the Bank of Bombay (founded on April 15, 1840) and the Bank of Madras (established on July 1, 1843) joined the banking landscape. These three banks played a pivotal role in modern Indian banking until they merged into the Imperial Bank of India on January 27, 1921.
SBI's history reflects its organic growth, shaped by the financial demands of the British imperial administration and local European commerce. Drawing inspiration from European and English banking practices, it adapted to changes in the local trade environment and the evolving relationship between the Indian economy and the global economic landscape. Recognizing the significance of this historical foundation, SBI decided to create an Experience Center at its head office in Colaba, Mumbai. This center aims not only to showcase the bank's history but also to provide a unique and immersive learning experience.
